You’d be amazed at the reach your brand can achieve thanks to Snapchat.

Snapchat shockingly surpasses Twitter’s popularity with over 150 million active users. Right now 10 billion videos are viewed per day on the platform.

Snapchat also has a higher engagement rate than both Twitter and Facebook – with users spending around 25 to 30 minutes on the app every day.

WHAT IS SNAPCHAT?

Snapchat is a social app that allows users to send photos and videos that self-destruct in seconds. And this is the key feature that differentiates Snapchat from other platforms – every snap is short-lived. (You can keep this one though! )

 

 

WHAT MAKES IT SO DIFFERENT?

Unlike the expertly curated content you’re used to on Instagram, Snapchat captures candid moments that connect users guilelessly with the people behind the brand.

Because every photo or video has a time limit before it disappears into the ether – there is no pressure to make a lasting masterpiece that will sit on your account forever.

 

 

Everything captured on Snapchat uses your phone’s built-in camera – so users see the raw and real you. This transparency allows users to connect on a deeper level than other more polished platforms – offering the sensation that the person or brand is standing right in front of users. Instagram has jumped on this phenomenon with Instagram Stories.

 

USING SNAPCHAT FOR YOUR BRAND

SET UP YOUR ACCOUNT

To get started download the app onto your smart phone and set up your account the way you would with any other app. NOTE: Your username cannot be changed so choose it carefully. You will also need to change your privacy settings as all accounts default to a private setting. To do this click on your ghost icon and select the gear.

 

 

ADD FRIENDS

Next, add some friends by again clicking on the ghost icon to pull up the main page. You can add friends by either typing in their username, Snapcode or location.

SEND YOUR SNAP

To create your snap simply click on the circular button on the bottom of the main page.

  

Before you send out your snap you can add a filter, some emojis, text and a sticker. Have some fun and play around with these options to capture your audience.

Click on “My Story” to share your snap with everyone, or you can select users individually by clicking the checkmark box next to their name.

 

 

 

CREATE A SNAP STORY

 

 

You can post your snaps to your Stories section. Everyone can view your Story and it will last for a 24 hour period before it disappears.

When you’re ready choose the “My Story” button and add. You can repeat this process throughout the day to build upon your story for the day. Use this tool to engage your audience with a sequence of photos or videos.

 

TOOLS TO IMPROVE YOUR STORIES


You can change the speed and direction of your snaps by using the snail icon to slow it down, the rabbit to speed it up, and the arrows for direction.

The rewind feature allows you to get creative by reversing the order of your video.

To find these tool, keep swiping left like you would with a filter.

 

MARKETING ON SNAPCHAT

 

Taco Bell got a lot of attention when they created their own filter.

They got over 1.5 billion views!

 

 

To launch their new toy, Sphero, Star Wars used influencers. One influencer they worked with was Shaun McBride – who gets 2 million Snapchat views daily. Working with influencers is a must – they know their following.

 

 

During the 2015 VMAs, MTV created a live story on Snapchat. This allowed anyone in the area to post pictures or videos to the story. Celebs and audience members shared some hilarious behind-the-scenes footage – and 12 million people viewed the story on Snapchat!

 

 

When using Snapchat make the most of the authentic element in your creative process. Users are looking for action over polished perfection every time.

You can showcase new products, people within the company, or even cheeky behind-the-scenes look at your brand. You’ll want your audience to see who’s behind your brand – the more you show them – the more closer they will feel. This is a great opportunity to make the most of the personalities within your business – so allow yourself to be quirky.

For your Story – try to stay within a clear theme or message in order to create a narrative. You can tease your audience by adding and revealing more throughout the day.

Be yourself. Be funny – laughter is always engaging, and shows the less serious side to your brands personality. Focus mostly on interaction. Your focus needs to be on what you can do for your audience – it’s not all about you.

HOW TO BUILD AN AUDIENCE
